The tournament results ...
The Legends Golf and Country club was the site of the 2nd Annual Canadian Open Hickory Golf Championship August 17th--a 36-hole tournament using antique golf clubs. The second 18 of the 36-hole tournament was held in conjunction with the Annual Legends Tournament at which a local golfer is honored for his/her lifelong contribution to golf in Alberta. This years inductee was Jimmy Harper--a longtime Willington cup team member and local personality who through his work in golf has set a high standard and encouraged many young golfers to achieve at a high level in the game.
In the hickory portion of the tournament, a total of 30 golfers demonstrated their skills using pre-1935 hickory golf clubs and wearing period dress (plus fours for the men and dresses for the ladies)...certainly an unusual sight on a modern day golf course. The players however were no slouches when it came to shot-making. A total of 64 birdies and 1 eagle were made using the hickories with the final winning total of 1 under par over 36 holes. This year's champion, John Wilson from Beaumont, Alberta had his hands full defeatiing Paul Biocini from Modesto, California. The two were tied after the 34th hole. Wilson hit his tee shot on the 35th hole--a 170 yard par 3--to within two feet for a birdie and a 1 shot lead. Biocini birdied the 36th hole but to no avail as Wilson rolled in a 10 footer to match the birdie. An exciting match under any circumstaances and even more so using antique golf clubs!
Highlights of the tournament included a tournament low round in the morning of 69 by Ben Plaunt of Edmonton, Alberta.
