2005 Canadian Hickory Championship

August 24-26, 2005

The tournament results ...

Wednesday dawned overcast and cool but still an enjoyable day - a practice day with a difference! To let players see the course and get used to the layout, players were paired according to ability and played 2-man scramble 9 hole match play with the winners of matches going on in the draw and the losers pairing up and playing on the B side of the draw. When all the dust had settled, it took Randy Jensen of Omaha Nebraska and his Canadian partner Lisa Ann Carr 45 holes to finally eliminate the other teams! As well, various players and collectors brought items of interest to sell with the trade show running all day. The evening rounded out with a Prime Rib dinner.

Thursday was a warm sunny Alberta day and featured the annual pre-tournament US/Canada Ryder cup match play competition with 16 players on each team competing in Ryder cup style matches: 9 holes - foursomes; 9 holes - better ball and 9 holes - singles. Brendan Casey generously provided a trophy to be used on a permanent basis (The Casey Cup?) for the Ryder Cup match play events won this year in convincing fashion by the Canadian Team. The gauntlet has been thrown down for next year with Randy Jensen naming Max Hill to captain the 2006 US team and John McMurchy naming Ben Plaunt to captain the always strong Canadian team. Max has his work cut out for him! The evening was spent enjoying a supper and viewing of a private golf collection - something for everyone!

Friday featured another nice sunny day for the 36 holes of the stroke play competition. 62 players (50 from across Canada, 11 from the US and even one from London England!) showed up with hickory clubs and dressed in their finest 1900's style garb! Competition for the overall Canadian Open Championship was stiff with Randy Jensen of Omaha Nebraska shooting 69 on the first 18 holes followed closely by Sherwood Park's Ross Kenny with 70. The second 18 followed suit with Ross Kenny in the end birdieing 2 of the last 3 holes to edge Jensen by a single shot. Great Golf! Overall low net was taken by Max Hill of Austin Texas. Second low net  Don Kavalec of Omaha and third net: Wayne Aaron of Atlanta, Georgia.

Presentations included the honoring of local legend Babe McEvoy for his work with junior golf in Alberta. A steak bar-b-que followed with all parting with the promise to meet again next year - same time - same place!
